The cost of coal??? Is it really "cheap" to burn coal??

Many people say that the low cost of coal in comparison to other energy sources makes it a good source of energy to use in generating electricity. What do you think about the "cost" of coal describe in the blurb below???

"The National Academy of Sciences has released a study indicating that burning fossil fuels costs the United States about $120 billion a year in health costs, mostly because of thousands of premature deaths from air pollution. The damages are caused almost equally by coal and oil, according to the study which was ordered by Congress. The study set out to measure the costs not incorporated into the price of a kWh or a gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel. The estimates by the academy do not include damages from global warming. Coal burning was the biggest single source of such external costs, but the variation among coal plants was enormous. The worst plants, generally the oldest and burning coal with the highest sulfur content, were 3.6 times worse than the average."

Yesterday, we went on a field trip to an MSU green roof; it was very cold. Mr.Rowe had gave us a little tour on top of the green roof and he had shown us the plants growing there. He said that they weren't very tall; only a mere six inches.

We figured out that when water goes thru plants it is slower than when it goes thru rocks. We poured 2 inches of water into a plant and we did the same with rocks.

I think that the black house absorbed more heat even in the shade b/c it is darker, and the darker something is, the more heat and energy it will absorb. Wether it's in the shade or in the sun.

We investigated the effect of house color on the indoor and outdoor temperature of the house. In Tuesday's experiment (where the average air temperature was about 85 degrees F), we conducted experiments to determine if the color of the materials used in building designed mattered in how hot the building got. Here are the results for all six groups:

I went on the blacktop outside and i didn't get very hot. I don't sweat much, so when we started, I was asked how hot I was. I said, " Two point five." That meant I was in between two and three on a 'hot temperature' scale. I was sort of hot on my back a little, but i wasn't completely burning up.
Latre on , the blacktop temperature rose up to a surprising ninety-four degrees Fahrenheit. I still felt the same as when we started the experiment. A two point five.

Thanks to the hard work and sheer tenacity of Angie and Shari who queued up for tickets from the wee hours of Saturday morning, a select group of GET-Citians got to see Obama in person, on his 47th brithday, at the Lansing Center on August 4th, 2008. We got to hear Mr. Obama talk about how he would kick off his energy policy by focusing on creating green collar jobs and fuel efficient and alternative cars in Michigan! Here are some pictures of the GET Citians at the event, and the pictures they took of the Democratic Presidential Candidate.

Earth Day 2008

This is a photo journal showing how hard the GET Citians worked to prepare for Earth Day 2008 where the GET Citians were invited by Mayor Benero to set up an exhibition at City Hall to celebrate earth day in Lansing.

The Get city earth day mural was painted by many talented artists who worked hard for over 4 hours to create their masterpiece. Mayor Bernero commended the artists for their beautiful work!

The photography display team also created eye catching educational pieces on the energy crisis.
