FIeldtrip to the Erickson Power Plant

On the 25th of January, we went to visit the Erickson Power Plant to learn more about how electricity is produced through burning coal. Here are some pictures of us exploring the power plant, and some interesting things that we learned!

We started off with a brief introduction given by a staff member of the plant. Then we all got hard hats to wear because you cannot go ANYWHERE in the plant without a hard hat! It's a safety rule.

We looked mighty fine in our hard hats! Take a look at Kaylin & Jeffrey!!

We then went for a tour of the power plant, here's what our journey looked like.

We looked at the massive filtration systems that are really noisy. We had to listen very carefully.

Here we are standing in the "Hazardous Chemicals" zone. It was very cool and we were very safe because we had all the safety equipment: hard hats and goggles!

There are 9 floors to the plant. We enthusiastically climbed up FOUR floors...

We then had several views of the INSIDE the furnace, which was really hot!!

Finally we went to the control room where we learned that many things need to work together in harmony for the power plant to run effectively. We were also very happy to learn that the Erickson Power Plant is a coal burning plant that has won awards for being "clean burning" - they take care to release fewer pollutants into the air.

Go GREEN! Go Lansing! Go Get City!!
